Practical information
- Lofoten Islands during autumn and winter

A cluster of islands reaches out for more than 100 miles along the North Norwegian coastline. The southernmost islands lie approximately 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle and almost 70 miles from the mainland. The group of islands is called LOFOTEN. Why not seek out the utmost of experiences - Lofoten in winter?

So what is it like in Lofoten during the winter?

The peculiar light conditions during the winter in Lofoten have attracted artists for decades, and they have found their inspiration in the abundant countryside, powerfully characterized by mountains that climb dramatically out of the sea. We use to say; “Where you and the mountains meet the sea” As a result of flourishing artistic community, the region boasts many art galleries that are well worth a visit.

The winter weather in Lofoten often varies dramatically. In the western and southern parts, there is hardly ever snow and seldom any frost. The mountains of "Vågakaillen" and the "Svolvær Goat" in the east and north often don a winter coat, but even in these parts of Lofoten, the weather fluctuates between rain and snow throughout the winter.

Lofoten is not, however, dominated by a quirky and changeable climate. The winters are often characterized by long periods of easterly winds carrying stable weather and calm seas. That is when the sea is harvested. What has made Lofoten famous throughout the ages, is the abundant winter cod fishing that has always formed the basis of existence for the local inhabitants.

Dressing in Layers

Next to the skin: Your base layer should wick sweat away from your body to keep your skin dry. Cotton should not be used - save your t-shirts for other purposes. Good long underwear pieces are appropriate made from fabrics such as Thermion, polypropylene, Thermax, Thinsulate, and silk.

Insulating layer: This layer will keep you warm and can be shed once you warm up. Wool, fleece, pile, down in a jacket, shirt or vest. Outer layer: To protect you from the elements, a windproof and water resistant jacket. It should be worn loosely.

Pants: If the weather is frigid, long underwear bottoms or tights underneath another pair of pants will keep you warm. Cotton and denim should be avoided. Running pants or running tights made of synthetics that wick moisture will keep you more comfortable in rain and snow.

Accessories

Hat: A hat is essential to keeping your body heat from escaping, as well as shedding rain. A polar fleece hat with ear covering is my ideal winter headgear.

Earband: For those whose ears get cold, earbands are the answer.

Gloves or mittens: Mittens will keep your hands the warmest as the fingers work together to build up warmth. Look for windproof mittens. Water bottle: You need water in winter as much as in summer, and drinking fountains may be turned off. Bring water along to stay hydrated when you join one of the guided peak trips with snow shoe. Scarf, neck gaiter, ski mask: Having a scarf or similar item along to wrap around your neck when the wind turns brutal can save your comfort when you are out on orca safari, zodiac safari or on guided trekking tours.

Happy Feet

Waterproof shoes or boots: If your join the orca safari with big boat or zodiac or you are out on a guided trekking tour it`s a very good invest in a pair of waterproof walking or hiking shoes.

Traction: Don't wear slick soled shoes if there will be wet or snowy pavement. For icy conditions, see Stabilicers, YakTrax or Ice Walker slip-on cleats.

Socks: Switch to heavier socks or wear two pairs for more insulation. Test your socks with your chosen shoes to make sure there is still room for your toes to wiggle.
